August 8, 2011 - The Stratford Brakettes put the finishing touches on a perfect season on Sunday, winning the 2011 Women's Major Softball National Championship with a 9-0 victory over the St. Louis Saints at DeLuca Field in Stratford. The Brakettes closed out the year with a 63-0 record, eclipsing the 57-0 mark of the 1971 Raybestos Brakettes, the only other undefeated team in the franchise's 65-year history. The Stratford Brakettes clinched a berth in the Sunday's WMS Championship Game with an 8-0 victory over the St. Louis Saints in Saturday's winner's bracket final in Stratford, CT. Kristyn Sandberg belted two homers for the second straight game, while Stephanie Call added her 30th home run of the year. Brandice Balschmiter overpowered the Saints, striking out 11 batters to improve to 23-0 on the year.
The Stratford Brakettes advanced to the winner's bracket final of the WMS National Championships with a 12-0 victory over the Lyons (PA) Spirit, Saturday afternoon at DeLuca Field. Rachele Fico struck out eight batters in a two-hitter, as the Brakettes smashed five home runs. The St. Louis Saints beat the NY Raiders 10-2 to earn a spot opposite the Brakettes in Saturday night's 7:15 game.
