Canada Ends Brakettes' Two-Year Win Streak

August 4, 2014 - The Stratford Brakettes had their 129-game win streak come to an end this weekend in Ontario, as the Canadian National Team swept a three-game set at the Brampton Fairgrounds. The Brakettes had not lost a game since July 28, 2012, when the SoCal Hurricanes captured a 4-3 decision in Henderson, Nevada.

The long road trip to the greater Toronto area saw a short-handed Brakette club drop a close 2-0 game in the first contest on Sunday evening, as Shannon Smith allowed just one hit. Canada's Jen Yee doubled in the first inning to drive in a run, as a trio of walks and a Brakette error contributed to the scoring. Neither team would score the rest of the way.

Tatum Buckley went 2-for-2 in the contest, while Elena Bowman and Mandie Fishback picked up the other two hits for Stratford.

Canada scored two first-inning runs in the nightcap as well, en route to a 12-1 victory. Erika Polidori led the way with a sixth-inning, pinch-hit grand slam.

Yee doubled and homered for Canada, while driving in three and scoring twice. Megan Gurski contributed a double and an RBI single for the Canadians. Carey Leigh Thomas drove in three on a pair of singles.

Mariel Schlaefer got the Brakettes on the scoreboard in the seventh inning with an opposite-field double. Jess Mouse scored on the play after reaching on a base on balls.

Elise Fortier and Shannon Smith also doubled, while Fishback reached on an infield single in the contest for the Brakettes.

Canada closed out the three-game sweep with an 11-0 win on Monday afternoon. Megan Timpf led the way for the Canadians with a two-run homer and an RBI double.

Schlaefer had another double in Monday's game, while Fishback walked and picked up her second hit of the series. Taylor Scott singled twice in her debut for the Brakettes.

The Brakettes will return to action with a doubleheader on Tuesday night at 6:30 against the St. Louis Saints at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field.
